Junior Sailing Club Marks 25 Years

More local news from Dibben and Dibben. This year sees the Royal Lymington Yacht Club’s Wednesday junior sailing programme marknig its 25th year. It has been teaching children the basics of sailing and over the years has helped thousands of youngsters learn how to sail – and even has even given rise to some of the UK's Olympic best performers. To help mark the celebrations in style, the club had a visit from its royal patron Her Royal Highness Princess Anne who saw the club in action at first hand.

Club secretary Kevin Podger was reported as saying; “Wednesday sailing was started in September 1984 by Jonathan Rogers and Tom McEwen, who got together because their kids were at that age of learning to sail and they thought there should be some weekly session to teach them. Around half a dozen kids started out but the numbers quickly grew – it just went from there.”

Wednesday Junior Sailing now has around 200 children on its books and up to 100 often turn up to one of the two-hour sittings.
