Proposed Rail Expansion Plan For Hampshire
It has been revealed today in the local press that train companies want a new £73million rail link across the heart of the New Forest, Hampshire . It has been proposed that under a plan backed by South West Trains that two new stations would open and a tracking running a line straight through the National Park would be put into place. The scheme has been put forward as they expect rail passenger numbers to soar over the next couple of years. It has been suggested that up to £70million would be ploughed in to the creating a station at Ringwood and revamp the track to Brockenhurst.
And on the Waterside, the line between Hythe and Totton would be opened to rail passengers for the first time in years. That scheme would only cost around £3million because the line is still operational but at the moment in mainly used just by freight trains.
The proposal, put forward by the Association of Train Operating Companies, has identified the two towns as main population centres which currently have no passenger rail services.
Author Chris Austin has been quoted as saying "idea could become reality within five to ten years. "
