Midsummer Dreams In Southampton
John Hannides, council boss in charge of leisure, culture and heritage, promised this will be the first in a programme of events. International street dance acts, plays put on by local schools, open air theatre, light shows and orchestral performances are among the events that could soon hit Southampton streets.
He went on to say the national Cultural Olympiad on July 24 to 26 would be a chance to showcase what Southampton has to offer. The programme is still being discussed but it may include art exhibitions, street theatre and a celebration of the city’s maritime and aviation history.

Southampton's Historic Bargate Could Be A Cafe
The controversial makeover has won the support of the guardians of the city’s heritage, but they warned any development must not detract from the landmark’s historical significance. The monument was reopened to the public four years ago by the Southampton Heritage Federation. The main room above the arch has been used as an art gallery since 2006 and curators A-Space have another three years left on their lease

House sales 'continuing to rise'
This information is the latest to show a steady rise in interest from buyers, and following similar rises in mortgage approvals from lenders. Earlier in the week, the British Bankers' Association (BBA) reported the fact that there had been a steady rise in mortgage approvals over the last six months. The detailed showed that the number of approvals for house purchases by BBA members rose to 31,162 in May, up 15.8% compared with the same month a year ago.
The HMRC figures also reflect the typical "spring bounce" in the housing market, with buyers showing more interest at this time of year.

First Time Home Buyers - How To Light Your First Garden
One very simple way is by using candles or the naked flame. The flickering light given off by candles is both charming and tranquil some might even say romantic. Clusters of night lights in small holders look spectacular when lining either a pathway to set of small steps or even on a low lying wall top.
For the more exotic why not try the paper concertina-style Japanese lanterns in an array of stunning colours, or even the traditional retro style style lanterns with its heavy brass and glass. Not only are these items very decorative and attractive but they are also practical because their flames are protected from wind and breezes.
The other option and one that is becoming more popular is that of garden flares and oil-burning torches. These look spectacular when grouped together either large clay pots or simple steel buckets filled with sand, (remember to space them a safe distance apart from each other). They too are also designed to withstand a certain amount of wind and breeze. Garden flares will burn for several hours and many can be impregnated with citronella or eucalyptus oil, which will help keep mosquitoes and gnats at bay which is always a bonus.
So that is candle light and flame and whilst these are very pretty they are not permanent and are at the mercy of the elements. As an alternative you might want to consider a more permanent solution to lighting your garden. An extremely cheap option for this, is that you could go for solar-powered lights, which don’t require any wiring or complex installation.
Solar powered lighting can be found on sale at most garages and some even given them away when you buy fuel for your car. Solar-powered lights need no wiring as they store the energy of sunlight in a battery. They are not a very powerful light source, so if you want to light an area of any size, you’ll need quite a few of them. As their power runs out, then so does their light, bringing a somewhat natural end to an evening in your garden.
However should you opt to put in a wired solution for lighting your garden you must at all times consider the safety aspect of doing this and remember if you do not feel you have the electric skills to do this call in an expert. As a general rule of thumb try to opt for a low-voltage system as these are fairly easy to install and are much safer.
Low-voltage systems take their power via a transformer which steps down the electrical supply to a very low voltage. This means that even if you cut through a low-voltage cable accidentally, there’s no risk of electrocution. Nonetheless, it is not a bad idea to run them in some protective conduit and bury them to avoid tripping or accidental damage. It should go without saying that all outdoor electrical fittings must be fully weatherproof and suitable for the location that you are installing them in..
Low voltage lights (because they are so easy to install) have become very popular and now come in many different shapes, sizes and colours Low-voltage recessed lights are very elegant along walls, down steps, or even set into decking, emitting a glow that is bright enough to illuminate the general surrounding area without creating blinding upward shafts of light. If your outdoor space has a large tree or a pergola you could try and create a night-time canopy of twinkling stars with low-voltage weatherproof net lights.
Now that is what I call romantic!

Hampshire Bats Saved From Eviction
Colleen Mainstone, from the Hampshire Bat Group, said was quoted saying; "the family of 30 brown longeared bats had used the barn for a number of years to give birth and raise their young." It has been reported that sat least three other species, including pipistrelle and serotine bats, have also been spotted.
The barn is used by the neighbouring Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve wardens to store fencing materials and equipment used to manage a reserve. Speaking on the housing figures, Zach Pandl at Nomura Securities in New York was quoted as saying "This starts report is actually very encouraging. Single-family housing starts, where the core of the inventory problem is in the housing market, are really coming back at a good pace.
And he concluded with "I would emphasise though that housing activity does remain at extraordinarily low levels, we really need to come back strongly from here."

Hampshire School Gets £696,000 Boost
Thorndean school in Chandler’s Ford Hampshire is pumping £696,000 into sports facilities which will benefit both the students and indeed the local community. It has be outlined that the money will be used to put in a new floor, redecorate and extend the existing sports hall and to also include a conference room at the school. Head teacher Robert Sykes was quoted as saying: “This is excellent news for both pupils and community groups. This is something we have wanted to do for a long time."
“Sport benefits pupils because of the skills involved in learning an activity and the positive health effects. With better floors and facilities it will help our sports teams take things to the next level.”
He went on to say the school had demonstrated real sporting talent, with a badminton team that won the national finals and came seventh in an international competition. He said better facilities would help emerging sportsmen fine-tune their skills.
Funding for this very ambitious project has come from the school’s own funding, with a contribution from Hampshire County Council.

Isle of Wight Festival 2009
As the festival goers begin to arrive, Hampshire police were stepping up their operation to ensure it remains as safe and crime-free as possible. Campers are also being offered free biodegradable security bags so they can safely store valuables in their tents.
Isle of Wight Operations Inspector Terry Clawson said police have spent months planning with organisers and organisers preparing for the event, which runs until Sunday night.
“The event has a reputation as a good natured, family friendly event, but we must always prepare thoroughly for our role in maintaining safety and security amongst such a large gathering,” he said. “Although the festival has low levels of crime, police are putting a series of measures in place aimed at preventing and reducing thefts from people camping at the event.”
After a man was jailed in April for selling fake wristbands to get into the 2007 event, organisers have again promised to crack down on counterfeits. “I would urge anyone without a genuine ticket not to be tempted by any cut price alternatives,”

Plans for a waterfront arena for Southampton
Under early plans presented to Southampton City Council, the arena will be at the heart of a development that could also feature restaurants, shops and some housing.
“We are not going to be a Wembley Arena or The O2, but we could realistically attract an audience of eight, nine or ten thousand given the right events.”
The plans are being drawn up by Scottish-based developers Kilmartin, who were last July awarded an 18-month exclusivity contract to create a masterplan for the waterfront around Royal Pier and Mayflower Park.

Gosport MP to put duck house in charity auction
Apparently more than a dozen local charities have asked Sir Peter to donate the duck house. He said: "I've replied to the dozen or so people that have enquired that my wife and I are minded, in due course, to sell the thing for charity. "But in the present atmosphere we are letting the dust settle. We've had a lot of approaches and we aren't committing to this yet."
It does however seem the RIGHT thing to do !!!!

Move Evidence That Interest In Property Is 'Up Again'
The Rics survey, which has been running since 1978, takes a snapshot of the degree of confidence in the market from surveyors and estate agents across the UK. They reported that average sales were at their highest level since August last year.
However, at 11.8 properties sold per surveyor in the last three months, this remained 31% down on the same period a year earlier.
Rics members again suggested a further increase in potential new buyers window shopping for property, most notably in Scotland, London and the south-east of England.

This includes funding the work of over 4,500 scientists, doctors and nurses who are dedicated to help more people beat cancer.
An impressive 2,350 women took part in the 5k event to raise an estimated £157,000 for Cancer Research UK. Many of those walking or running the three-mile route around River Park chose to shun traditional sportswear, opting instead for eye-catching outfits and plenty of pink accessories.

Signs Of Recovery For The Housing Market
I don’t think so, and it would not be good news if they did. The housing market is slowly coming back to life after having its lifeblood, mortgage availability, cut off. The last thing we need is for prices to start surging again and it is unlikely that they will. Both Halifax and Nationwide attached health warnings to their numbers.
Nonetheless, a consistent story is now emerging in the housing market. Activity is slowly recovering and the fall in house prices is beginning to level off. A semblance of normality returning.

Planning Your First Garden
Only plant your garden for your needs. This is important. If you have a very small garden but plant a large, strong fast growing tree or, you soon will not have any garden left, just an overpowering tree or bush. Or if you have a young family or even a cat or a dog, flowers like sweet peas are beautiful and very pretty to look at, but ultimately these plants are poisonous and could cause your family harm. Your first garden needs to be a safe place to be in.
Remember to only choose the plants that will do well in your area. It is always far easier just to work with plants that like the climate and the soil that you have. Ignoring this means that you will be spending time endlessly watering and weeding just to try and keep them from dying. A little research right at the beginning of the project will go a long way and save you lots of time later on
Prepare the soil in your garden before you start to do any planting. Working in a couple bags of garden manure or bedding compost into your garden before there is anything planted is fairly easy and relatively painless. Do this now as attempting to repair the soil once you have already planted and your plants are established is a massive task. Any wise gardener will tell you that the real trick to having a fantastic garden is by having healthy soil. With healthy soil your garden will be healthier and you will certainly have fewer problems with plant diseases, and aggressive weeds.
Finally know and understand just how much light your garden will get. You may have planned and planted a brilliant garden but if there is not enough sunlight for the planting you have chosen (or indeed in some case too much light) then your garden will never work. The right planting needs the right light, too much or too light and you will need to re-think your project.
However remember, gardens do not appear over-night – they are a long term investment. If you do not quite get it right this time around, there is always next time. Part of the fun of planning your first garden is actually learning as you go – seeing what works for you and indeed what works for your garden. With a little thought and planning your garden will be a great success.

The charity dash follows the same route that British troops embarked upon in June 1944, from Tarrant Rushton to seize the Pegasus bridge in Normandy a day later, the first combat operation of the D-Day landings.
Every runner was wearing a T-shirt bearing the name of one of the 186 infantry soldiers involved in the operation.

New Forest bikers are speeding off to Casablanca
As spokeman for the team said : "We all like our home comforts, however to make the challenge even harder we are going to sleep under the stars, so will also need to carry all of our equipment on the bikes."
"The ride will truly be a test of our stamina, will power and the plain old ability to keep going! We will have no support apart from each other and what we can carry on our normal road going bikes (no adventure bikes here!)."

UK house prices 'up 2.6% in May'
The average UK home now costs £158,565, the figures showed. Prices in the last three months compared with the previous three months are generally regarded as a less volatile measure of the housing market. "There are some tentative indications of a possible stabilisation in activity, albeit at a low level," said Nitesh Patel, the group's housing economist.
"It is always important not to place too much weight on any one month's figures. Historically, house prices have not moved in the same direction month after month even during a pronounced downturn." He pointed to the fall in house prices of 11% during 1991 and 1992, during which time there were still five monthly price rises.
The Bank of England reported earlier in the week that the number of new mortgages approved for home buyers in the UK had risen in April for the third month in a row.
