Hampshire Duck Aids Research

More quirky local news from Dibben and Dibben - a Hampshire duck that made the national news when he was born with four legs is now helping scientists in America researching genetic problems in humans. Stumpy the duck lives at Warrawee Duck Farm, Hampshire, and has an extra set of legs behind the two he walks on. The owner of the New Forest Duck farm, arranged for a small tissue sample to be taken and sent to the scientists at the University of Chicago.

When Stumpy was first born the farmreceived an email from the University of Chicago to say they were interested in tissue samples and if he was to die they would be keen to pay for his delivery to the States for use in their genetic research.

About a month ago the birds at Warrawee Duck Farm were tested for avian flu and they took a sample from Stumpy, the owners also sent a sample to the researchers -"they were very excited and said our timing was excellent. It would be incredible if Stumpy in his lifetime could actually do something for genetic research for the human race."
