Christmas Market and Ice Rink

More local news from in and around the South Hampshire area from Dibben and Dibben as Winchester council execs are set to put their support behindsthe city’s newest tradition – the Christmas market and ice rink. Since 2006 the joint attraction has lured thousands of people and shoppers to the city over the festive period.

This year the market in the Inner Close is extending to 24 days and is expected to attract around 400,000 people. In 2008, 40,000 people skated and an estimated 250,000 people passed through the 17-day market. Hits on the tourism website rose by 185 per cent in December 2008 from 2006 as the market and ice rink becomes better known.

City council leader George Beckett is also proposing to give a grant of £7,500 to the cathedral to help with the event. The grant is part of a £300,000 package the council agreed in April to help the economy in the recession.
