Winchester Lights

More local news from in and around the Hampshire area from Dibben and Dibben as Winchesr is set for much better Christmas lights, the Council was told. The 2008 display was beset by technical problems from the contractor working for the Winchester Business Improvement District.

This year BID is using the same contractor as the council and illuminating more streets, including St George’s Street, City Road, Station Approach and possibly The Broadway.

Council leader George Beckett said the better display was a success for the BID, which raises a levy for local businesses. Cllr Beckett said it was right that businesses should pay for the lights as they will benefit from the extra trade.

A grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund's Young Roots programme of £23,000 meant the dream could become a reality. The opening was the conclusion of 18 months of hard preparation work.

Having come up with the idea, working outside school hours, the young people quickly enlisted the support of a number of partners for the project; notably The Minstead Training and Study Centres, Totton & Eling Historical Society and Sunnyfields Organic Farm.

The project also involved researching the history of the site and the heritage of Hounsdown village as well as traditional methods of growing fruit and vegetables. They also learnt how to use traditional tools and to maintain traditional methods such as hurdling and pot throwing.
