Admirals Cup May Return To The Solent

Widely reported in the national press today that one of the world’s best known regattas is on the brink of returning to the Solent thanks to a cash boost from Southampton investment firm Skandia. The Admiral’s Cup – widely regarded as the world championships of offshore racing – saw nations battle it out on the water for the ultimate prize, before the event ran into financial trouble in 2003. But it could be set for a glorious comeback after the former sponsors of Cowes Week donated an undisclosed sum to event organisers the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC).

The club will use the money to carry out a feasibility study into bringing back the 52-year-old biennial event, which once saw Prime Minster Edward Heath captain one of Great Britain’s boats to victory. RORC chief executive Eddie Warden Owen said the study was the first step towards bringing the event back in 2011. He said: “This study is the first step to making the dream happen.

“It’s an enormous boost to the idea of bring back the Admiral’s Cup. “We want to see the Admiral’s Cup back as a world class regatta, deserving of its name. “It’s not just us talking the talk – it really could happen.”

Skandia sponsorship manager Tim Sewell added: “The history and heritage of the Admiral's Cup is immense.

Estate agents report rise in sales

The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has reported that its members sold more houses in April than in any month since October 2007. The average estate agency branch sold ten properties last month, up from eight in March and a record low of five in August 2008. The Association’s chief executive, Peter Bolton King, says: “What we are beginning to see now are consistent positive indicators that have held firm or improved since the beginning of the year.”

He believes that British attitudes towards property ownership will not be fundamentally changed by the recession and that confidence is returning to the market.

Referring to recent figures published by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) showing a rise in lending for house purchasers, Mr King comments: “Every measure by every organisation has shown that the fall in house prices is slowing, and it is understandable that those people who have access to finance want to take advantage of that and reap the rewards when the market begins to bounce.”

Tips On Choosing The Right Removal company

Whether you're moving just a few doors down, around to the next road, all the way to another town or city, or even making that big move to another country, choosing the right removal company can will make the world of difference to you and could help to make the whole process fairly stress free. So, how do you choose the right removal company and can you really be sure that is reliable. Most importantly of all – will they actually help or indeed hinder the whole moving process.

Really the first question that you should really ask yourselves is do you actually need a removal company? Well this is one project that you should never underestimate. There is a huge amount both of physical effect and mental planning to move the contents of your home to a new one. Simply packing boxes full of your belonging is one thing, but moving them in and out of removal vans and into your new property is another. This is very physically demanding and if you are on a very tight deadline will lead to you becoming very stressed. So it is a good plan to appoint a removal company to take on board all your worries, so you can concentrate on organising the rest of your move to your new home..

Do not just skim the Yellow Pages or the internet and pick a company at random.Get a number of quotes from several companys. Make sure that you get these quotes well in advance of any proposed completion date – never leave it to the last minute. If the company are any good they will normally be booked up well in advance.. When you get your quote take into account the price, the service you will receive and when the removal company are able to conduct the move for you. For extra ease and convenience, many larger removal companies will offer a packing service, too, so that you can be confident that everything will be taken care of. Some will give you an instant indicative quote online, but it's better to actually speak to someone from removal company – if you can go and visit the offices – this will give you a good feel for the company and exactly how professional they are. Some removal companies will send out a sales estimator to see what you have to move and access your existing property for easy of access. This allows them to price the quote more accurately and in turn should help you appoint a removal company more easily, quickly and with some confidence..

The whole quotation process could take a couple of weeks and agreeing on an available date might take another few weeks, so give yourself enough time to pick a removal company. Remember, many of the better removal companies are booked up many many weeks in advance, so it pays to start looking for a removal company as soon as you can and of course this should be well before your completion date is due.

Most removal companies will provide you with dedicated moving insurance against loss or breakages of your property while it's in transit. Make sure this is the case before booking anyone. You could also contact your existing home contents insurer to find out if your current policy will insure your property while it's being moved, too. This being the case you could save yourself some money on taking out additional insurance for the removal transition.

It goes without saying the you should at all costs avoid the cowboys! It's a good idea to check that any removal companies you contact are members of either The British Association of Removers or The National Guild of Removers and Storers. These two organisations are dedicated to providing excellence in the removals industry for the benefit of both removal companies and you their customers. They set standards and a code of conduct for their members, so you should be reassured of their professionalism and conduct at all times. Look out for the logo of both of these associations when looking for a company to use.

If you take all of these factors into consideration then your choice of removal company will be a good one and your move should be painless and stress free.

Vintage cars in the firing line of resident bats

EVERY evening, staff at a Hampshire tourist attraction take part in a bizarre guessing game. Employees at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, try to work out which of the historic cars are likely to be damaged during the night by bats living in the roof. About 100 bats are thought to have taken up residence in a replica of a 1930s garage in the main exhibition hall.

At night they fly out and leave their calling card on some of the cars on show, damaging the paintwork.

Staff attempt to protect the collection by covering vehicles beneath the creatures’ flightpath – but choosing the right ones is driving them batty. Cars in the danger zone include a Sunbeam that set a new land speed record of 129mph an hour in 1922.

Museum attendant Andrew Farr said: “We do what we can but we don’t know where the bats will go.”

Hot Hot Hot Hampshire

HAMPSHIRE was basking in scorching temperatures again yesterday. Weather forecasters predicted that the mercury would climb to 27C (81F), the hottest day of the year so far. People grabbed their buckets and spades and flocked to the beach yesterday to make the most of “wall-to-wall” sunshine. Travel experts said there was congestion on roads leading to most coastal areas.

Traffic Masters head of travel Ross Gould said the A31 westbound through the New Forest towards Bournemouth and Poole had had the most notable problems.

He said: “The beachside resorts are hotspots for the holiday traffic. In the UK if there is any hint of sunshine people head straight to the coast.” Matt Dobson, forecaster at MeteoGroup, said yesterday's highest temperatures fell short of the 26.5C (80F) reached on Friday, which was the hottest day of the year so far.

He added that the south enjoyed temperatures of up 21C (70F) by the sea.

Southampton Beer Festival

APACHE Rose Peacock, I Can’t Believe it’s not Bitter and Pots Black – those are just some of the strange-sounding varieties of Hampshire ale that will be supped by beer lovers this week at the 13th annual Southampton Beer Festival. During the three-day sellout event, more than 3,000 people are expected to descend on the city’s Guildhall to neck almost 100 varieties of beer. Walking around dozens of stands with the distinct aroma of real ale wafting through the air, there are barrels stacked upon barrels of beer, lager and cider on offer to tempt thirsty visitors.

It’s estimated that around 13,600 pints of beer will be consumed during the festival. But despite the country being in the grip of one of the worst recessions in living memory, organisers say ticket sales have gone through the roof.

Rob Whatley, an organiser at Southampton Beer Festival, who has been a member of the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) for more than 30 years, said: “Ticket sales have been better this year than ever before.

Verderers in support for New Forest 30mph limit

NEW Forest Verderers have backed proposals for a blanket 30mph speed limit across the New Forest in Hampshire in a bid to further reduce animal fatalities. The call for the reduction of the limit from 40mph on unfenced roads was made at the May Verderers’ Court at Lyndhurst by the New Forest Commoners’ Defence Association, an organisation which looks after the interests of those who own the cattle and ponies that roam the forest. Spokesman Mike Eccles was looking for the backing of the verderers, and he got it.

Following discussions in committee, official verderer Oliver Crosthwaite Eyre came down firmly on the side of a reduction in the 40 limit, which has been in place forest-wide since 1992. He said: “Having a universal speed limit of 30mph across the whole of the forest makes very good sense.

“The government's own statistics show that the 10mph difference between 30 and 40 hugely reduces the risk of accidents.

“Another benefit would be the removal of the multitude of ugly and rather pointless new signs that have had to be erected all over the forest because of the different speed limits in most of our villages, sometimes only yards apart.

Tips On Moving House

Moving house is listed as one of life's most stressful events and it is easy to forget so many things and let the whole situation become a complete disaster. Here is a short guide to help you through this stressful period.

If, as part of your purchase price there are items that have been included it is a good idea to write yourself an inventory check-list. The inventory will detail the condition of the property and any of the contents that you have purchased as part of the deal. It is really very important that you are present when this is being checked in order to ensure that both parties agree with the observations made.

Although this may seem very formal it might be a good idea to sign the inventory if you are happy with the details noted and request a copy for your own records. If items are included within the purchase price remember to check on the quantity and indeed the condition of these items on arrival. Make sure they are what you expected. If there are any problems – it is vital to let the other party know straight away – try to settle this between you and hopefully not get your solicitor involved.

There are also a number of things that you can do prior to the day you move in. In an ideal world you should have your contract signed and have four weeks to prepare for the move. Unfortunately these days due to delays in surveys, mortgage offers, or with your purchasers or further down the chain sellers often don't know for sure if the move is actually taking place until what seems like the last minute.

In an ideal situation these are the arrangements you should make in your countdown to moving:

One month prior to your move:

Make a file to collect all documents in connection with the move in one place – this will really help you in the long term and is good practice for good housekeeping. Ask for a price quotation for your completion date from two or three reputable removal firms. Also get written confirmation that the removal firm you have chosen is fully insured.

If you are currently living in rented accommodation make sure you let your existing landlord know you are moving out

Contact telephone company to arrange for installation of phone line at new property. If you are having a local move it might be possible to retain your existing number, have you checked on the availability of broadband at your new property.

Inform telephone, electric and gas companies and arrange to have meters read. This is very important. Most of the utility companies now have a department that deal superficially with house moves.

Two weeks prior to your move:

Inform the Post Office of new postal address and arrange for redirection of post after completion. A lot of people forget to do this and is the boom of many new house movers.

Mail out change of address cards and don't forget to include bank, doctor, dentist, optician and vet. If your moving out of your existing area you will need to register with a new doctors and indeed dentist. Do not be surprised if these sometimes have waiting lists or if there are forms to complete in order to supply this information.

If you follow so of these tips then as the big day approaches you will have less to worry about.

Zebra foal born at Marwell

Some good news in the local Hampshire press today. Keepers at Marwell Wildlife are welcoming a new arrival - a zebra foal. The new male Chapman’s zebra was born several weeks early, but despite the premature arrival it was soon standing and within just a few hours. Keepers have named the new foal Zeus, and he can now be seen out and about at Marwell with mum, Pheobe. Chapman’s zebras are social animals and are often found living in groups known as ‘harems’.

Consisting of one stallion and several mares and foals, the harems often come together to form vast herds throughout East Africa.

Zeus’ harem consists of mum Phoebe, dad Josef and two older females, Sophie and Harriet.

Zeus’ parents have already successfully reared seven foals between them, so has the best start in life as his keeper, Mark Humble adds: “Phoebe is an excellent mum and is always keeping a watchful eye over Zeus, making sure he is not getting into any trouble.

A Potted History Of Stubbington

A potted history of where we are based in Hampshire. Both Stubbington and neighbouring Crofton were mentioned in the Domesday Book (the 11th century UK census) as small districts belonging to the estates of Titchfield Abbey. During the 19th century, Stubbington engulfed Crofton and the small fishing village of Hill Head. The Crofton name still remains in the name of many local facilities, such as the Crofton School (secondary) and Crofton Old Church.

At the start of the 20th century, the village still consisted of just a few dozen cottages and farms. By 1939, the population had risen to around 2,500 and a number of small shops had opened surrounding the village green. This remains the central focus of the village to the present day, with a war memorial situated on the central village green.

The 'Crofton Old Church' at Crofton is one of the oldest known inhabited sites in the area. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book and it is thought to date back to the reign of King Alfred in the 9th Century. It is believed to have caught the eye of Samuel Pepys in 1662 and was extensively renovated during the 13th Century. A new church (Holy Rood) was built in Stubbington which took over the function of Crofton Church in 1878.

In 1922 a wooden War Memorial was built to commemorate those from Stubbington and Hill Head who fell in the First World War. Their names were carved into the roof of the memorial although over the years they have been worn away. The Memorial takes the form of a shelter over the village pump, and today it is one of few pre-war structures standing in the vicinity of Stubbington Village Centre. The names carved into the roof of the memorial have now been cleaned and can be seen clearly.

Tips On How To Sell Your House Quickly

Selling your house in today's economic climate is difficult enough, but there are some simple rules that people tend to forget, however by following these rules you might even get to sell your house a little more quickly. It is all about presentation, first impressions count for everything and most Estate Agents will tell you that houses are normally sold to prospective buyers within the initial first five minutes of a viewing. So here so some common-sense tips that you should follow when putting your property onto the market.

Ensure the carpets and floor coverings of your property are kept neat and clean. If need be employ the services of professional company to clean your carpets. A bright clean carpet will lift the whole mood of a room – they they are dirty and grubby this will bring down the tone of a room and make it feel smaller.

Minimalise your kitchen, put away any electrical items, spare jars pots and pans. Less clutter means more space. It goes without saying that a less cluttered house has a greater chance of selling that a house that appears to be cluttered. De-clutter your cupboards, take out any unwanted items – again cupboards with a little room to spare in them with appear bigger than they are.

If you have large expanses of wall try hanging a picture or two – this will do two things. Firstly it will breakup a plain area and secondly and more importantly it will allow you to introduce some extra colour into a room without the need to re-decorate. However make sure that the picture is fairly mainstream – strange art may put off a buyer straight away.

It is vital that all windows are spotlessly clean. Again you may need to bring in a professional company to do this for you. Rooms can be given the appearance of being larger if they are filled with natural light. In addition natural light gives a room a much warmer feel to it and will make it more 'softer' and have a homely ambiance.

In show business, they say never work children and animals. Selling a house is the same. Make sure that all the children's toys are put away and as hard as it maybe ensure that the children's rooms are very clean and tidy. If you have pets ensure that the litter trays are clean and most importantly that they do not smell. If you do have pets ensure that your furniture does not have any pet hairs on it.

Sometimes the way to overcome any unwanted smells is to buy and burn some scented candles or sometimes incense (but make sure that the smell from these is not overpowering). Another good trick is to put freshly cut flowers in a room. Not only will this give off a very pleasant fragrance but also will again add colour to a room. If you do place flowers in a room remember that they should always look fresh – never leave limp or dying flowers in a room.

One last tip is to remove or reduce down the number of photographs you may have on show. It is vital that any prospective buyer can imagine that the house is theirs. With too many of your favourite or personal photographs on display this is going to be hard for a buyer to do. You want them to feel that they could move in straight away and whilst it may seem a little hard to de-personalise your home – it really could make the difference in making a quick sale or leaving your house on the market for a very long time.

A rich cultural heritage, varied coastline and unspoilt countryside makes Hampshire a ‘top of the list’ place to live.

Today the mineral-rich spring waters of the River Arle still offer perfect growing conditions and the watercress beds around Alresford are one of the country’s main areas of production. Throughout the day, cookery demonstrations will star several award winning Hampshire chefs, including executive chef Andy MacKenzie, (Hampshire’s Food and Drink Chef of the Year) and head pastry chef Mark Tilling (2008 British Chocolate Master), both from Winchester’s Lainston House Hotel. They will be joined by Cresson Creative’s Jennifer Laing, Gold Star winner in the prestigious national Great Taste Awards 2008.

The role of an Estate Agent

The benefits of using an estate agent are as follows. The agent can help you to set up a plan of action through an analysis of your needs and finances, the current housing market, homes available in your price range and mortgage options from the banks. The agent personally conducts your search to find areas and homes that fit your requirements. The agent can guide you through making an offer on a home and presenting it to the seller.

The role of the estate agent can be summarised as follows. The estate agent is the link between the buyer and the seller. The agent will negotiate an agreement of sale acceptable to both parties. An offer to purchase is drafted by the estate agent. This must be signed by the agent, the buyer and the seller. Once signed it becomes a legal binding contract of sale. A copy of this document must be attached to the loan application form. For this service, the estate agent charges a fee or commission paid by the seller. Do not allow estate agents to pressurise you into purchasing a property. This is an important decision you have to make, take your time looking for the right house.

There are a number of professional bodies within the UK for Estate Agents. One of these associations is The National Association of Estate Agent. The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) is the UK’s leading professional body for estate agency. Its 10,000 members practice across all aspects of property both in the UK and overseas, including residential and commercial sales and letting, property management, business transfer, auctioneering and land.

Founded in 1962 by estate agent and entrepreneur Raymond Andrews, the NAEA was established with the goal of upholding good practice and high professional standards in UK estate agency. This struck a chord with the industry at a time when there was little representation for estate agents and has allowed the Association to grow phenomenally over the years.
Today, its key roles include providing help and guidance for property professionals across a broad spectrum of disciplines while continually campaigning to make the property market more efficient and user-friendly for the home buying and selling public.
As a leading player in the UK property industry, the NAEA offers significant benefits to both estate agents and consumers.
