A new international celebrity arrived in Southampton yesterday while most of the city was still sleeping! And it would seem she’s got a lot to shout about – from a real grass lawn for croquet, boules and outdoor concerts to a glass blowing museum on board. The £700m Celebrity Equinox, the only cruise ship to be launched in Great Britain this year, arrived in Southampton for almost two weeks of dockside celebrations and fun.

The ship’s operator, Celebrity Cruises, predicts that its increased focus on the UK cruise market, centred around the port of Southampton, for 2009 and 2010 will generate more than £20.5m in knock-on benefits for the local economy.

Sightseers will have a grandstand view of the ship, berthed at the City Cruise Terminal, with her distinctive livery and two funnels, from nearby Mayflower Park.

Southampton - City Of Culture

It has been reported in the local press that Southampton City Council are actively being urged to put in a bid to become the UK’s first City Of Culture. Apparently the Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw, who launched a national competition to choose the first holder of the title yesterday, said that Southampton had “very strong cultural traditions and cultural heritage” and – if it put together a bid – would be seriously considered.

Southampton City Council has already announced its intensions that it wants to make a joint bid along with Portsmouth City Council to become a European Capital of Culture.

It is hoped the winning UK City of Culture will become a focus for national attention in 2013, the first year of the competition, hosting a string of high-profile events including the Turner Prize, BBC Sports Personality of the Year, The Brits and the Stirling Prize.

Southampton Old Town Gets Thumbs Up

Southampton today got the thumbs up as the 'Old Town' area of Southampton was recognised as one of the best looked after conservation areas in the country. Green Festival Set For Southampton

UP to 10,000 visitors are expected to take part in Southampton’s biggest environmental event of the year on Saturday. Enviro Day 2009, in the Bargate area from 9am to 4pm, wants to promote recycling and sustainable living in the city. Organised by Southampton City Council and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, it will feature more than 40 environmentally inspired stalls, free entertainment and air ambulance demonstrations.

Councillor Matt Dean, Cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “Enviro Day is our chance to talk about the environment and hopefully inspire people to recycle.

“There has never been a more important time to think of the environment so it’s great that we are running events like this.”

The day also links with WestQuay’s Pamper the Planet event taking place this weekend.

TV gardening expert Charlie Dimmock will open the event and provide advice for anyone wanting learn more about growing their own fresh, seasonal produce. Shoppers can watch cooking demonstrations featuring local chefs and learn more about how to cut down on waste and reduce their food miles.

Southampton Beer Festival

APACHE Rose Peacock, I Can’t Believe it’s not Bitter and Pots Black – those are just some of the strange-sounding varieties of Hampshire ale that will be supped by beer lovers this week at the 13th annual Southampton Beer Festival. During the three-day sellout event, more than 3,000 people are expected to descend on the city’s Guildhall to neck almost 100 varieties of beer. Walking around dozens of stands with the distinct aroma of real ale wafting through the air, there are barrels stacked upon barrels of beer, lager and cider on offer to tempt thirsty visitors.

It’s estimated that around 13,600 pints of beer will be consumed during the festival. But despite the country being in the grip of one of the worst recessions in living memory, organisers say ticket sales have gone through the roof.

Rob Whatley, an organiser at Southampton Beer Festival, who has been a member of the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) for more than 30 years, said: “Ticket sales have been better this year than ever before.
